They Just Don’t Get It

The deep, dark secret of the creative workplace is sometimes you find yourself working with people you consider less intelligent than yourself. (That’s not an accurate assessment of course. They may be a different personality type or their skills lie in different disciplines than yours). Just the same, you will inevitably meet people who you feel don’t “get” it.

It can be frustrating and challenging to find a way to communicate with colleagues who don’t think like you, but it’s essential that you do.

Instead of dismissing these folks as deficient, realize that different people process information in different ways. Perhaps you like to make quick decisions and they need time to weigh options. Maybe you’re the type of person who likes to figure it out as they go along and your colleague needs a detailed plan before beginning. Or maybe you think in pictures and they don’t.
If you take a moment to see things from their point of view, you might find they have something to offer. If you don’t, you may wind up being labeled as someone who just doesn’t get it.
