The Useful Employee Handbook

by - m on 05/08/2012

Most employee handbooks are books of can’ts.

Written by HR and legal departments, the employee handbook is a guidebook on how to get fired.

Perhaps a more constructive approach would be a cultural handbook.

A practical guide of how the system works.

Chapters might include:

  1. What To Expect On Your First Day
  2. What We Mean by Collaboration and Teams
  3. Risk – Rewards and Consequences

One such example was created by VALVE, a gaming company.

Read it here – VALVE Handbook For New Employees

I think it’s time to take back the culture from the HR and legal departments.

We can write a more useful employee handbook.
