The Resume Autopsy – Cut It Out

by - m on 04/20/2011

What you decide to leave out of your resume is just as important as what you decide to include.

If you’re a baby boomer, don’t go too far back into your employment history. Include only the experience that is relevant to the job you are applying for.

Also, while it’s good to state that you have a college degree, listing your graduation date is not a requirement, especially if it works against you. (The mobile technology course you took this year is good. Your Computer Science degree dated 1980, not so much). Go here for other boomer resume tips.

Speaking of dates, don’t include months in your history. It’s not a resume killer per se, but it’s clunky. (I usually see this on student’s resumes).

Here are a couple of websites for student’s resumes and my favorite resume site – Purdue’s OWL.

Remember that telling the truth doesn’t require telling everything you know.
