Tom Hanks tells a story of speaking with his crew on the first day of his directorial debut. He gathered everyone around and delivered a synopsis of his career thus far. He told them of his philosophy of film making and thanked them all for being a part of another chapter of his life.

After a smattering of applause, the Director of Photography walked up and said, “Great speech Tom. Now where do you want the camera.”

It’s wonderful to tell your staff of your vision and your philosophy. It’s helpful to give insight.

But people also need specifics.

Sometimes, folks just need to know what you want them to do.
