Talking About Brands

I was chatting with my college-aged friend Neil yesterday when the topic of branding came up.

“I think the whole ‘What’s Your Brand’ and ‘Elevator Pitch’ thing is a bunch of hooey,” he said. “It’s just a way for people to sell books.” (Yes, he actually used the word “hooey”).

“What’s wrong with having a short sentence that defines yourself?” I asked.

“Nothing,” he said. “But, I’m more than one sentence. And sometimes I don’t know how to define myself. I’m a different person depending on what I’m doing and who I’m with. Why not just be honest with each other.” 

Then he added, “What’s wrong with that?”

What’s wrong with that, indeed.
