Taking Risks

by - m on 11/15/2010

As a manager and leader I ask my teams to take risks. Our mantra (if we had only one) is “ask for forgiveness later.”

Working this way is harder than it sounds because more often than not we wind up asking forgiveness more often than we’d like.

But that’s not the problem. The problem is managers sometimes “counsel” the team member to ask permission in the future – even when they didn’t intend to.

In our rush to make things right, we may send the wrong message. We say “it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission,” but by chiding someone for the ‘mistake’ they made we send the opposite message.

Reward risk taking. No one ever stole second base by standing on first.
