Pick Your Battles

One of the most significant decisions you will make during your career is when to try to make a change and when to acquiesce.

Some company cultures are driven by a “we’ve always done it this way” mentality. Sometimes a person in authority will create a policy that may set the organization down a path you may disagree with.

I guarantee there will be people in the organization who you don’t like or with whom you will disagree.

There will be times when you will need to decide whether to do something or not do something. No one can make the decision for you and often there is no “right” answer.

It may help to base the decision on whether or not the person or policy is affecting your brand (that is, who you are and what do you stand for) and your goals (where do you ultimately want to be in your life). You also might consider talking it over with a trusted friend or colleague.

It’s most likely not a good idea to make the decision in haste or to base your decision on gut instinct.

It’s been my experience that with big decisions gut instinct is wrong.
