I spent Saturday shooting a pilot for a cooking series for my friend Chef Virginia Willis (author of Bon Appetit Y’all). I haven’t played the role of videographer for a while and was reminded how difficult the job is. Because this was done on a shoe string, I operated camera as well as audio. Focus, framing, color balance, audio, and format are all things to consider. Mess up any one of these things and the job is in jeopardy.
As leaders and managers in a creative workplace we often forget how difficult the jobs we ask our staff to do are. Having the opportunity to fail (again) gives us the chance to be forgiving when things don’t go as planned.
The jobs are hard. Be sure to commend your folks when things go well. And be a coach when things don’t go as expected.
