Informal Power Trumps Rank

Colleagues may seek your advice. They may ask your opinion about how to solve a particular problem. Or they may ask what to do under a certain situation.

You have more power than you think.

Maybe you don’t have the rank of VP or even Director, but you have the reputation of being – male or female – the “go to guy.” Maybe you’re the Creative Director everyone requests or the person who understands the budgeting software better than anyone else. This informal power is more valuable than rank.
“Rank” gets you a good parking space, a better salary, and invited to strategic planning meetings. Informal power builds your brand and expands your connections.
In the long run, I’ll take informal power.
