Cover Letters Revive Resumes

When someone asks you to send them your resume, be sure to include a brilliant cover letter as well. Rather than sending only a list of facts that you hope convinces the company to contact you, make it easy for the recruiter.

Make your cover letter more than an introduction. Make it your story.

According to Michael Margolis, writing The Resume Is Dead for 99percent.coma good bio answers these five questions:

  1. Who am I?
  2. How can I help you?
  3. How did I get here (i.e. know what I know)?
  4. Why can you trust me?
  5. What do we share in common?

I don’t believe the resume is dead (recruiters still expect to see a list of accomplishments), but without an exceptional cover letter, your resume is on life support.
