Can Small Talk Improve Networking Skills?

According to psychology professor and shyness expert Bernardo J. Carducci, small talk is the “cornerstone of civility.”

“If you think about being kind to and connecting with people, people you engage in conversation, you’re going to open a door for them,”

Professor Carducci offers the following tips to improve your small talk – and social networking – skills.

  • Try For Nice, Not Brilliant. You don’t need to be witty or funny. Just nice.
  • Have Something Ready to Say. Stay up on trends. Read the local paper.
  • Rehearse Your Intro. What’s your name? Why are you here? What do you do?
  • Now, Stop Talking. Listen. Smile.
