In chemistry, a catalyst accelerates change without undergoing change itself. In business, a catalyst is the person who accelerates the organization toward the goal. They affect change but don’t change themselves. They are consistent. That’s what makes them valuable.

What I call catalysts, Seth Godin calls LinchpinsThey may not be the most creative person in the organization, but the company couldn’t succeed without them.

Catalysts can be spotted by what they accomplish:

  • Get the bid.
  • Do the work.
  • Hit the deadline.
  • Deliver under budget.
  • Beat the competition.
  • Motivate others.
  • Inspire others.
  • Share the credit.
  • Ship on time.

Catalysts are the true leaders – regardless of their rank.
