A Smiley Face Is Not A Smile

Contrary to popular belief “Social Media” may not be very social.

The word “Social” is defined as:
• needing companionship and therefore best suited to living in communities : we are social beings as well as individuals.
• relating to or designed for activities in which people meet each other for pleasure : Guy led a full social life.

A recent study by the Association for Psychological Science indicates that concern for other people’s feelings is in decline and may be partially attributed to the emergence and use of online friend networks.

So-called social media platforms may connect us to others but they may not be the best way to communicate with others.

Here’s the workplace lesson. Visit with your colleagues instead of texting them or shooting off an email – especially when you are making a request (it’s harder to say ‘no’ to your face).

Have a face-to-face conversation once in a while. Be social.

A smiley-face emoticon is not a smile.
